The amount of data generated each day has grown
exponentially and data is now created from many sources that previously didn’t even
exist.
Recent U.S. government leaks from the National
Security Agency only hints at the scope of data use by all organizations, the
NSA themselves completed a huge datacenter in Utah recently http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2013/07/01/seven-stats-to-know-about-nsas-utah-data-center-as-it-nears-completion/
What we do know is that 90% of existing data was
created in the last two years.
Many previous functions that involved paper have
now been digitized and are historically archived. Many paper items such as
billing records, news, legal documents, photographs, etc..., are now stored
electronically and then there’s the vast amounts of data generated across
social media platforms.
This enormous amount of information is called
Big Data.
If you’re in the business of Capacity Management
then you may well have concerns about Big Data and its impact on your
environment.
I’m running a 2 part series, beginning on
September 12, to explore the issues and I’ll begin with what Big Data software
is and when relational database capabilities may be exceeded.
