I'll start the comparison
this week with a list of the key performance
metrics that are advisable to look at for capacity and performance management,
although these are only a very small sub-set of the actual metrics available to
you.
vSphere
CPU
Avg. CPU Usage in MHz
CPU Ready Time
Memory
Avg. Memory Usage in KB
Balloon KB
Swap Used KB
Consumed
Active
I/O
Queue Latency
Kernel Latency
Device Latency
Hyper-V
CPU
Hypervisor Logical Processor % Hypervisor Virtual Processor %
Memory
Dynamic Memory Balancer
Dynamic Memory Pressure
VM Vid Partition
I/O
Virtual Storage Device
Virtual Network Adapter
Knowing how and when these
metrics change is imperative to evaluating the system being tested, and we will
look at these in more detail further on.
VMware data comes in
through the vCenter and Hyper-V has a set of metrics available through perfmon (Hyper-V
makes dynamic memory metrics available after adding service pack 1)
On Wednesday I'll be dealing with the challenges you face in
benchmarking virtual environments.
