Capacity Management: Guided Practitioner Satnav – Who do I need to travel with and who do I not need? (7 of 17)

So….Who do I need to travel with?

In an aeroplane the answer might include pilot, navigator, steward and engineer.  In a car the answer might include a chauffeur, or the satnav itself (or a back-seat replacement).  In ITSM the list is quite long

The first two are the most difficult to find and the last few the easiest, as there are many companies like Metron offering consultancy services in this area.  The most difficult area lies in the people relationships within the organization, making sure that there is effective liaison between different domain experts and with business users.
The key is to find the right balance between external experts, short-term contractors and in-house staff.
And who is not needed? My advice is to avoid:
The super-hero (sysprogman) - Too busy fire fighting to install auto-sprinklers

The ITIL perfectionist: paralysis by analysis - Too busy defining how things are done in theory
The process perfectionist (BPR) - Too busy documenting, securing and verifying processes

The lean black belt six sigma process engineer - Too busy chasing absolute KPI numbers
The standards purist with his ISO2000 checklists - Too high level to have any practical impact
The boy racer who installs ITIL in 3 months - It is not a product and it is not a definition
Now we’ve decided who is coming along for the journey our next step is to look at what else has to happen at the same time and I’ll be dealing with that next.
